The global need for food, fibre and fuel – is there enough land to satisfy the demands? With globalization the needs for increased production of plants for different purposes, and the issues related to them, have acquired great international prominence. Virtually every organization with a mandate touching upon agriculture, forestry, environment or energy, is engaged. The production of food, fibre and bio-fuel require suitable land to grow on. The global competition for such land increases almost exponentially. Here we present and discuss a comprehensive overview of the current situation and thinking regarding global production of food, fibre and bio-fuel with focus on the issue of land availability and with projections on what will happen in the next 20 years.
