Tricorona first with version 2 Gold CDM

On June 25, 2010, Tricorona registered the 2nd phase of its Yangjiayao Wind Farm Project, making it the first Gold Standard CDM project registered under Version 2.0 to date. This is first Gold Standard CDM project registered under Version 2.0. The project is located in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in Northwestern China and consists of the installation of 30 variable pitch 1.5MW wind turbines of Chinese manufacture. The project generates renewable electricity in a region where electricity generation is primarily based on coal. By delivering clean electricity to the local grid, the project displaces almost 30,000 tons of standard coal per year and contributes to carbon emission reductions of almost 94,000 tons annually. The project also improves local air quality by reducing emissions of SO2, NOx and particulate matter by hundreds of tons per year. Sun Shuyong, Technical Director in Tricorona’s Beijing office, explains “the project is located in a barren region in a remote part of China and represents a rare example of inward investment in the area. Since the project only uses wind turbines manufactured in China, it has furthered the development of China’s growing clean tech industry in accordance with the technology transfer goals of the Kyoto protocol.” Representatives from the Chinese NGOs Global Environmental Institute (GEI) and “Cacti” Environmental Protection Organisation from Ningxia University have visited the project site to attend the stakeholder consultation meeting and expressed their support for the project. “Besides reducing the impact on climate change, the project has demonstrated clear benefits to the local population by improving the electricity infrastructure and creating employment opportunities,” said Guo Benchi of GEI Beijing. The 2nd phase of Yangjiayao is one of 18 CDM registered Chinese wind projects in Tricorona’s Gold Standard portfolio, but the first to be registered under Version 2.0 of the Gold Standard rules.
